How
Our Workshops Work
Each workshop is built around a “real life” home
renovation project provided by homeowners who offer their home
as a learning laboratory.
Projects may include:
• Bath or kitchen renovations
• Room additions
• Decks, fences, porches
• Other common renovations
Skills and theory might include:
• Plan reading
• Demolition
• Framing
• Sheetrock
• Trim carpentry
• Window and door installation
• Counter/cabinet installation
• Insulation
• Roofing or other project specific techniques
For each project, students
work from a set of architectural drawings provided by the homeowner. All materials
are delivered to the building site and everything
students need to work with is on hand.
Where necessary, the project includes
additional work by relevant sub-contractors. Evening lectures by
other building professionals included in the project
complement the hands-on learning. In addition, site visits to a local
lumberyard or other
project specific outlets may be included.
Workshops begin with an introduction
to basic construction theory, and additional theoretical knowledge
is incorporated as the project unfolds.
As with most
practical skills, most of the learning happens while doing the work
itself.
Safety is a constant thread throughout the workshop.
At the beginning of each workshop, power and hand tool safety are
covered
and students
are reminded
throughout the week to practice the principles of safe construction.
By
the end of the week, students will have learned and practiced a
variety of skills that will be useful in their own home renovation
projects.
